About the Lift Truck Operator Safety Review:

Purpose of this Testing Instrument

This site has been developed by material handling professionals to be used by employers as an aid in:

  1. Assessing a lift truck operator's knowledge of safe operating practices for the type of industrial trucks that the operator is expected to operate,
  2. Performing a periodic review of a lift truck operator's knowledge and competency for operating industrial trucks as may be required by OSHA and/or the employer's policy,
  3. Performing an assessment of a lift truck operator's need for remedial training following an accident or incident in the workplace or on the job site.

Scope of the Examination

This examination consists of multiple choice, true/false, short-answer, and essay questions covering the following areas:

  • Why training is important and why OSHA requires it for all operators prior to the start of work.
  • General rules of safe operation for industrial trucks of all types.
  • Environmental and surface conditions that affect safe industrial truck operation.
  • Capacity and stability of industrial trucks.
  • Load handling procedures and techniques.
  • Safe practices for routine inspection and maintenance of industrial trucks.
  • Special considerations and safe operating practices for specific types of industrial trucks.
  • Safe fuel handling for all types of industrial trucks including procedures for battery watering and charging.

Reliability of the Test Instrument

The examination consists of a set of questions drawn from a larger database of questions. The selection and ordering of questions is randomized such that no two examinations will be alike. Although some "required" questions will appear on all exams, no two exams will be identical which eliminates almost any possibility of two employees sharing answers to produce an improved score. This design feature also makes this test instrument useful for periodic re-testing of an operator as may be required due to a frequency of accidents or incidents in the workplace.

Customization of the Examination

The examination can be customized to meet the specific needs of the employer for the environmental conditions and load handling characteristics encountered by employees. This can be done in two ways:

  1. By manually selecting the types of industrial trucks, attachments, and special conditions for which the employee is to be tested, or
  2. By having a customized question set developed for your employee group such that each employee receives a standard exam that is tailored to address the safety concerns of your operations.
